thermal vs. kinetic SZ-effect

imagine there's turbulent motion in the ICM inside a cluster of galaxies: would that generate a thermal or a kinetic SZ-signal?

1 comment:

  1. the prerequisites for the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich-effect are isotropic and non-relativistic motion of electrons. whether you provide those in unresolved turbulence or by thermal motion does not matter. therefore, unresolved turbulence would generate the thermal SZ-effect, whereas resolved turbulence causes the kinetic SZ-effect.
