falling faster

can freely falling bodies overtake each other on the same trajectory? what would Newton and what would Einstein give as a reason?

  1. Imagine an object falling onto the Earth, dropped from somewhere with an initial velocity of 0. An object thrown downward soon enough with a high enough initial velocity can obviously overtake the first object (ignoring collisions, of course). Both are freely falling from the moment they leave the (same) starting point.
